“We’re not stupid.” -Google.
This was once a huge no-no that required all sort of painful gymnastics to make sure you weren’t getting a penalty. Now, with a magical wave of their hand, Google says “no more”.
tl;dr – they pretty much just index the one page and ignore the others.
